Prof. Ulrich Förstermann studied medicine from 1973 to 1980 at the Albert Ludwig’s University Medical School in Freiburg, Germany.
In 1980, he obtained his M.D. and License to Practice Medicine in Germany, and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Albert Ludwig’s University,
Freiburg.
From 1980 to 1984 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Pharmacology of the Albert Ludwig’s University. In 1984 he was appointed
to an Assistant Professorship at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany. In 1987 (after obtaining
his German "Habilitation") he was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Assistant Medical Director at the same Department.
From 1989 to 1991 Dr. Förstermann held a Fellowship from the Heisenberg Foundation, Bonn, Germany and worked as a Visiting Senior Scientist at
Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Illinois, USA. In parallel he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Northwestern University, Chicago,
Illinois. In 1991, Dr. Förstermann took over the Vascular Biology Project at Abbott Laboratories as the Project Director. In 1992 he was offered
the Chair of Pharmacology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and shortly thereafter the same position at the
Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. In 1993 he accepted the offer of the Johannes Gutenberg University and was appointed Professor and
Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology. Prof. Förstermann’s current research interests include: Nitric oxide (NO) synthases: biochemistry,
expression and functions; cardiovascular functions of nitric oxide; enzyme systems involved in the generation and control of oxidative stress
in the vasculature; pharmacological control of vascular oxidative stress. Prof. Förstermann has published 185 original peer-reviewed papers,
39 (invited) review articles, and 48 scientific book chapters (as of 8/2008). In addition, he is co-author and co-editor of a major
German Pharmacology Textbook (Aktories/Förstermann/Hofmann/Starke, Allgemeine und spezielle Pharmakologie und Toxikologie, Elsevier Publishers,
Munich, 2005).
Prof. Förstermann received a number of awards and honors including the Goedecke/Warner Lambert Research Award 1979 from the Albert Ludwig's University
Medical School, Freiburg; the Fritz Kuelz Award in Pharmacology 1986 from the German Society of Pharmacology and Toxicology; the Rudolph Schoen Award 1989
from Hannover Medical School; and a Scholarship from the Heisenberg Foundation, Bonn, Germany 19891993 (returned prematurely in 1991).
From 1998 to 2007, Prof. Förstermann was Chairman and Coordinator of the Collaborative Research Center 553 (SFB 553) of the German Research
Foundation (DFG). Since 1998 he has been Chairman of the Center for Natural Sciences and Medicine of the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz.
In 2005 he was elected Vice President of the German Society of Pharmacology (DGP), and re-elected in 2008. Since 2006 he has been a Member of the
Executive Committee of the Federation of European Pharmacological Societies (EPHAR).

Prof. Daniel McQueen studied Pharmacy at the University of London and qualified as a pharmacist in 1967. He then undertook further studies for a
PhD in Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy, London University, and in 1970 was appointed to a Lectureship in Pharmacology at the University of
Edinburgh Medical School. During 1973 he held a Medical Research Council Travelling Fellowship at the University of Utah Medical Center in
Salt Lake City. His research has focused on understanding how drugs affect sensory nerve endings, with the aim of developing selective peripherally-acting
agents for improving the treatment of chronic painful disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. He has published ~100 research papers. In 1980 he was
awarded a DSc by Edinburgh University and promoted to Reader. In 2000 was appointed to a personal Chair in Sensory Pharmacology at Edinburgh University.
He teaches pharmacology and therapeutics to medical undergraduates and pharmacology to biomedical science undergraduates, and has introduced several
new degree programmes, including the BSc Honours (Pharmacology with Industrial Experience). He is Director of Quality Assurance for the 5-year Edinburgh
MBChB degree programme.
Daniel McQueen has been a member of the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) since 1970, being elected to Fellowship of the Society in 2005, served
as an Editor of the British Journal of Pharmacology (19801986), a member of the Education Committee (20052008), and was a founding member
and Honorary Treasurer of the International Society for Arterial Chemoreception (19881996). He is also a member of the Physiological Society (1972),
and the Institute of Biology (1985, elected as Fellow in 1990). He was elected Honorary Treasurer of the BPS in 2008 and is a BPS Trustee. Daniel was
a member of the local organizing committee of EPHAR 2008 (Manchester Congress), and in July 2008 was nominated as a BPS representative on the EPHAR
Council, elected to the Executive Committee, and appointed as EPHAR Treasurer.

Prof. Thomas Griesbacher studied Medicine at the University of Graz from 1979 till 1985 when he finished his M.D. After the military service
at the Military Hospital in Vienna he started to work in the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of the Medical Faculty of
the University of Graz, at first as visiting scientist, then as research assistant. From 1987 till 1988 he was visiting scientist at the
Parke-Davis Neuroscience Research Unit in Cambridge, UK. After his return to Austria he continued to work at the Department of Pharmacology
and in 1994 was acknowledged as Specialist in Pharmacology and Toxicology by the Austrian Medical Association. In 1995 he became Lecturer in
Pharmacology and in 1997 he became Associate Professor at the university. In the year 2000 he spent one semester as locum professor for
Molecular Pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Since 2010 he is head of the Teaching Unit
Pharmacology of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of the Medical University of Graz. Since 2011 he is member of the
Ethics Committee of the Medical University of Graz.
Thomas Griesbacher served four terms as Secretary of the Austrian Pharmacological Society (APHAR) from 1999 till 2007, he was Vice-President
and President of the European Pancreatic Club between 2003 and 2005, and currently is member of the Examining Board for Specialists in
Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Austrian Medical Association, Head of the Section of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the
Styrian Medical Association and Member of the Austrian Independent Medicines Commission.
